What Daysium is, and who is behind it

Tim Huelin flew for twenty-two years as an airline pilot, where every flight carries a black box: a contemporaneous record of what happened and the data behind it.

During the pandemic, he began thinking about why people making high-stakes decisions had nothing of the sort. The first idea was a black box for business.

Then a friend at a family office described a four-year HMRC investigation. Boxes of paperwork going back twelve years. Events reconstructed long after the fact, then challenged for their accuracy. Enormous stress, uncertainty and expense — with the burden of proof on the family office throughout.

“If we’d had a black box,” she said, “it would have been a game-changer.”

It landed close to home. Commuting between Jersey and the UK, he had counted his own days on a spreadsheet for years and knew how fragile that was. What he didn’t know was the other half: what happens when someone is asked to prove those days years later.

So he went and found out — bringing together the tax advisers, accountants, tax lawyers and former HMRC inspectors who handle these cases for a living. That working group became Daysium’s thirteen founding partners.

Daysium is what came out of it: a platform built by people who had seen the same problem from different sides.

The goal: To fundamentally resolve the complexities of day counting and record-keeping
